Finding Focus and Honesty in Art: Shaun Weston’s Hello, Goodbye

When an artist steps into a new body of work, it often comes with equal parts anticipation and vulnerability.

For Brisbane-based artist Shaun Weston, his upcoming exhibition Hello, Goodbye at Field Trip Gallery is both a creative milestone and a reflection of his deeper journey as an artist – one supported through coaching in The Artists Business Lounge.

In this video conversation, Shaun and Amanda chat about the process of preparing for the exhibition, the honesty and dialogue shaping his new works, and how coaching gave him the focus and structure to move forward with confidence.

“The most nerve-wracking part of the exhibition is that the work feels a lot more honest than it has done previously.

And I think that’s come from delving into the why of what I do… Hello, Goodbye, those two things go together, and everything is going to be presented in pairs. So much is about dialogue. It’s two works in conversation, and it reflects that I’m at that point in my practice where I’m ready to be open to the conversation as well.”Shaun Weston

Hello, Goodbye is a brave exhibition. One that touches on deep and sensitive subjects, using vintage fabrics and layered materials. Setting pairs of artworks in conversation, he develops a push/pull tension, where comfort and resistance meet. His work invites viewers into both memory and transformation.

Through coaching inside The Artists Business Lounge, Shaun refined his exhibition statement, clarified his audience, and built the focus to share his work with confidence – both online and in the exhibition space itself. The process gave him both structure and freedom — space to make meaningful work while building the systems that support his practice.

“Good stuff always comes from pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone,” Shaun reflects. “The fact that I know what I’m doing actually drowns out a lot of the noise of what people say you should be doing.”

Hello, Goodbye runs from 5–10 September 2025 at Field Trip Gallery, Brisbane

Opening drinks are on Friday 5 September, 6–8pm, with an informal Artist Talk on Saturday 6 September, 2pm

Shaun will also be present in the gallery throughout the exhibition, welcoming conversations in front of the work.
